As an editor for the online publication, I not only revise articles that will be published on the site, but give feedback as well. In my feedback, I try to include compliments, as well as constructive criticism, to encourage writers to continue their passion for journalism. The rubric we use highlights certain aspects that are crucial for consistency across the site, such as AP style and captioning formats, along with basic writing conventions, such as grammar and flow. By commenting on each section, I'm able to provide more specific feedback to the writers to help them improve. Usually these specific comments also relate to the article directly, which gives writers a better idea of what exactly needed to be improved, rather than relying on abstract examples.
Additionally, we were asked to mentor an "intern" editor, usually a sophomore who had just entered the journalism program and were looking to become editors themselves. Adapting comments so that they were not only helpful for the writer, but also informative for the interns who were just learning how to give feedback and grade their peers was a challenging experience. |
